The Maths Dance club is a place where mathematics and dance are closely connected and used together to support learning of curriculum maths in an exciting, playful and stimulating way. In the Maths Dance club the students experience mathematics through an alternative kinaesthetic approach, which enriches their mathematical learning through a total sensory involvement.
“I liked this lesson because we moved while learning. I enjoyed acting out numbers and shapes. This was kinaesthetic
learning!”, Y6 student .
Young Maths Dancers are given the physical and emotional space to explore kinaesthetically numbers, shapes and space and use their moving bodies to explore mathematical areas, stretch the boundaries of their learning and understanding in maths, practise dance and engage in the creative process of building up maths inspired choreographies.
“I enjoy it is unique and different but it is still maths! “, Y6 student.
In Maths Dance we believe that a child’s education does not take place only in the classroom. We see mathematical questions, patterns, numbers and shapes everywhere. The school’s lunch hall, the corridors, the playground, the library, the empty classrooms, the park, our neighbourhoods, our homes, every place can become mathematically interesting and inspire us to create a choreography.
We find opportunities to move and learn through interaction with our environment and other people. We love working collaboratively and experience equality recognising and valuing difference. We develop our language and logical reasoning skills, cultivate our creativity and become confident in expressing our own views.
“I liked this lesson because it was more fun and interactive. I learnt that maths is a lot easier to learn moving around.”, Y6 student.
The Maths Dance lessons are inclusive and can be adapted to all year groups, of different numbers, academic and artistic abilities and experience. They can either be in the format of early morning, lunchtime or after school clubs and are originally designed, planned and taught by Panorea Baka. However Maths Dance is a space open to new ideas and embraces collaborations with artists, professionals from the dance industry and educators who share our passion for mathematics, dance and education.
